Joaz HillJoaz Hill is a Maine coast woodturner residing in the town of Stonington on Deer Isle, a gorgeous setting which greatly influences his work. A member of the American Association of Woodturners and the Maine Crafts Association, Joaz recently studied with David Ellsworth at the Haystack School of Crafts. Each piece of Joaz's work is unique, the character of the wood dictating the form. He works in exotic woods as well as local hardwoods and spruce and cherry burls, which he collects on Maine islands. He turns hollow forms, natural edged vessels, jewelry boxes and specialty items, often incorporating stones which reflect the grain and color of the wood. Turning for Joaz is an exploration of texture, color and space. He works on a hundred year old lathe which he has lovingly refurbished. His work is displayed in galleries around the state as well as in many private collections. |
